Ten teams of Caribbean filmmakers from nine different countries have been selected to attend the renowned 2015 CaribbeanTales Incubator (CTI) , taking place in Toronto, Canada, from September 8th to 13th at the University of Toronto. Among them is Bahamian team producer/cinematographer Travon Patton and TV personality/producer and marketing expert Tracey-Ann Perpall. The group’s participation in the Incubator is sponsored by the Inter American Development Bank through its Regional Entrepreneurial Asset Commercialization Hub (REACH).

Now in its sixth year, the CTI is a marketing and financing platform that offers selected Caribbean and Diaspora filmmakers an opportunity to hone their creative and business skills in the context of an international marketplace environment. The intensive six-week programme includes an intensive five-day workshop in Toronto, and culminates in a Caribbean Pitch Breakfast at the TIFF Bell Lightbox attended by high-profile industry delegates, The overall goal of the CTI is to increase the pool of strong, monetisable, world-class, indigenous film and television content from the Caribbean and its Diaspora, in order to build the region's audio visual capacity.

GIPPIE’S KINGDOM (soap opera, 12 x 22mins), now in production for its third season, was created by producer/cinematographer Travon Patton and writer/director Dr. Ian Gregory Strachan. “Gippie’s Kingdom” tells the story of three generations of the Gibson family. Everett Harrison Gibson, Gippie, an enterprising businessman, finds himself in the middle of the storms that engulf his children: his eldest son Junior, the playboy pharmacist, his eldest daughter Monique, who finds herself in a troubled marriage, his youngest daughter Everena, the College student attracted to the dangerous side of life, and his “outside son” Evan, who is too smart to fail but too angry to follow the rules. Patton will be representing the project at CTI, and is being joined by Tracey-Ann Perpall.

Reflecting on the challenges of building a sustainable film industry in the Caribbean, Patton says, “The Incubator creates hope that this step can be the catalyst for creating a progressive sustainable film and television industry in our lifetimes.”

The CTI Program is an end to end process that supports projects from concept through production and marketing to sales of content. CTI aims to accelerate the creation of a vibrant world-class Caribbean film industry, by assisting filmmakers to generate dynamic, distinctive, and viable long-running content to be sold internationally.

The projects were selected by a panel of international industry specialists. Mentors include Nicole Brooks (Producer, Director, Playwright), Rita Shelton Deverell (television, theatre, academe), Rodney V. Smith (Director, Producer, Author), Christopher Laird (Banyan Ltd, Gayelle: The Channel) and Floyd Kane (director, producer). Alongside the IDB REACH programme, this year’s the CTI is supported by funding from Telefilm Canada; the French Consulate in Toronto, and the St. Lucia Tourism Board. The project is also a component of CaribbeanTales' 3D project, supported by a financial contribution from the European Union and the assistance of the ACP Group of States.
