New York City, NY  - The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Creatively Speaking Film Series are proud to present the U.S. Premiere of the critically acclaimed docu-drama from Bahamian director, Travolta Cooper. His biopic on the life of Sidney Poitier won an award at the Bahamas International Film Festival and “Black Moses” was selected as the first Bahamian film to close the same festival in 2014.

“The Black Moses” is currently on the film festival circuit in the U.S. and is making its U.S. theatrical Premiere simultaneous to its theatrical launch in The Bahamas as part of the Creatively Speaking Film Series at MIST Harlem on October 10, 2014 in celebration of The Bahamas “Discovery Day”.

The film follows a turbulent and exciting period in the life and Bahamian trailblazer L.O. Pindling, a complex, enigmatic and nuanced character struggling to lead the Bahamas to political and economic equity in 1967. It is also a story of the struggle encountered by many post-colonial countries as they challenge the status quo. Part informational and part documentary, the film stars Golden Globe nominee Dennis Haysbert (24, Sin City 2, Dear White People). Mr. Haysbert plays the mythical Black Moses who surfaces to tell his story as the character of Pindling.

Danny Glover describes Dennis Haysbert’s delivery as the “intoxicating and alchemical in a performance that gets under the skin, and remains long after you've seen it.”

Filmmaker Travolta Cooper says this about his inspiration for writing The Black Moses, “In hindsight, I know now this journey didn’t begin with L.O. Pindling. It really began with my research on the legendary Hollywood icon Sidney Poitier. As I began writing the script, I also watched and followed, with the world, the campaigning and rise of President Barack Obama. I was astounded at the parallels. Though both men are a generation apart, I couldn’t believe how in sync the themes, nuances, and archetype that each story was. This was my first true insight into what I’ve termed the Moses ‘myth’ or ‘model’ as it relates to black leadership, particularly in post-colonial countries. The mythology became even more abundantly clear as I worked on my previous film “Founding Fathers: Sir Stafford Sands” because in doing so I also studied the life and times of L.O. Pindling, who was literally called “the black Moses”.”

The film screen times at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street, New York, NY are as follows:

Friday October 10th at 7pm – followed by Q&A with filmmaker and reception with live Bahamian music

Saturday Oct 11th at 5pm - followed by Q&A with filmmaker
