The Bahamas National Youth Choir announces Nathan Lightbourne as their guest artist for the 2015 concert season (March 25th – 28th 2015)

Nassau,  The Bahamas - The Dundas Center for the Performing Arts will come alive with the ‘sound of music’ by pianist Nathan Lightbourne in his guest performance during the 2015 concert season of The Bahamas National Youth Choir. Known as ‘Mr. Showman’, Nathan performs standards including Broadway show tunes, movie theme songs, nostalgic classics and music from times gone by with a perfected art form of glitter and glamour. He combines his classical music training with a unique style that captures the hearts of his audience.

For this concert, all selections to be presented by Mr. Lightbourne are by the African American composer; Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882 – 1943) entitled “In The Bottoms Suite” movements: No. 3 Honey (Humoresque); No. 4 Barcarolle (Morning); and No. 5 Dance (Juba). Nathaniel Dett was an incredibly gifted composer yet, in the present day, his work is underperformed. His music is in a unique blend of musical traditions. While at times his piano pieces are reminiscent of Chopin, Gershwin, Debussy, Joplin, they still maintain the heart of the Negro Spiritual sound. These pieces are part of a Characteristic Suite that depicts daily life in "The Bottoms."

Mr. Lighbourne is a versatile pianist with the ability to cross effortlessly between different genres of music. As a performer he has given solo classical recitals, played in jazz bands, and has performed in the pit orchestras of musical theatrical productions.

He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from VanderCook and is an avid supporter for the advancement of music education in The Bahamas and worldwide. VanderCook College of Music is a private, nonprofit college in Chicago, Illinois, and is the only college in the US solely specializing in the training of music educators.

Mr. Lightbourne will perform on March 25th – 28th, 2015 at the Dundas Centre for the performing Arts during the 25th Anniversary of The Bahamas National Youth Choir. The public is invited to attend.
