Goldenchild was born Stephen Carey in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, on September 19, 1984.
As a youngster growing up in the Bahamas, Goldenchild was not out with the other boys shooting marbles or chasing lil girls.
He was somewhere with a walkman or sneaking into someone’s studio session.
Goldenchild grew up around island musicians, but it was his love for rap music that drew him into the studio where he recorded his first vocals at the age of 5.
Stephen was given the name Goldenchild by the shocked on-lookers in the studio who were so impressed with his passion and delivery.
Currently, Goldenchild is seeking a record deal to promote his music to the world.
As an artist from the Bahamas, he wants to show that rappers from the islands have international appeal.
His Mixtape - Pure Gold, is a compilation of music for the hard core rap fan or the casual listener either male or female.
His hit “Brand New” was number one in June 2008 on the local charts in The Bahamas and is currently preparing for the release of the official video on a major network.
He has branded himself using the customized Golden insignia used on his CD, myspace page, promotional materials and posters.
To support the local release of his Mixtape - Pure Gold, Goldenchild has made consistent appearances on local radio stations in Nassau and Grand Bahama. He has the support of the DJ’s and is performing in shows in the Bahamas and South Florida such as Buju Banton concert, Bahamas Best Dance competition and Giving back to the hood in Miami.
Goldenchild’s art of performing came from his experience with local talent shows, displaying his unique vocals and high energy stage shows in his early teens.
At the age of sixteen, Goldenchild began looking at his talent, and love for the art of rap as something that could possibly become a career.
He hooked up with a high school classmate and formed a group called “Dangerous Minds”.
As a group, “Dangerous Minds” began recording, performing, and opening up for acts such as Elephant Man, Patra, Ludacris at Stop the Violence concerts, a local concert series hosted on Grand Bahama Island.
At the height of their local fame, the second member of the group became incarcerated.
This event threw Goldenchild for a loop forcing him to give up or start from scratch.
Determined to keep his dream alive, Goldenchild began recording solo material and was encouraged to take tracks to the local radio station by his growing fan base.
His song “Hot Girls” had a lot of commercial appeal with it’s catchy hook and age appropriate lyrics, and soon began being requested on a daily basis on the local radio station.
After a few months of radio spins, there was a demand for more material and at this point the idea for a mix tape was born.
When the mix tape was completed Goldenchild was a senior in high school and had a huge dilemma on his hands, seeing that he was also a stand out basketball player.
After some convincing from his parents and basketball coach, Goldenchild left for college on a full basketball scholarship.
A year into his studies, Goldenchild felt something missing and decided to leave the ball behind to once again pick up the mic.
After a brief stint back home in the islands, Goldenchild set his sights on moving to Florida which was becoming a hot bed for the movers and shakers in the entertainment industry.
Upon arrival in Florida, Goldenchild began collaborating with the local group and soon became it’s fourth member.
After recording a few mix tapes and being on compilations with some of Miami’s finest, Goldenchild’s marketable image and star quality was being noticed. People began requesting solo material from the island born and bred MC.
With a growing fan base and online following, Goldenchild is now poised to put The Bahamas on the map as a solo international artist.
Goldenchild plans to prove that hip hop is not just a type of music but a culture that he has not only embraced but has become a part of.
About PURE GOLD: When I started recording the songs that would become my PURE GOLD mixtape, I tried to make a “rider”.
By “rider” I mean a CD that you could put in and ride from start to finish. As I sat down with my instrumentals, some old, some new, some original and some not.
I started picturing the type of album I would make if ever given the opportunity. Track 1, Real Talk is a venomousspew of my feelings about the industry and my strive to become a part of it. The chopped and screwed hook of Get Dem Stacksis an ode to the Dirty South, where I showcased a laid back flow. On Toptalks about where I want to be which is followed by Brand New – a catchy braggadocio track describing
just how fly and fresh I am. The title of the next track speaks for itself,
“Paid” describes that I am gonna be paid in the not-so-distant future.
No Ramp 2borrows a sample from my Bahamian National Anthem, and my reggae artist, Spydah joins me on the track to re-enforce the fact that we don’t play around.
After you take a ride with me on Hop In, I bring the whole Pur Gold click together for the posse cut, No Mercywhere we each take turns trying to destroy the mic. Flutes, Win or Lose and Dilemmasmooth it out for the ladies, each dealing with a different aspect of Love and Relationships.
Win or Lose shows the struggle between my love for music and the woman in my life.
R.B.C. takes you back to the islands with me and my crew followed by Red Handed the real gritty dark track.
The CD ends with the tracks Get to Know Me and Showing Love.
“Get to Know Me” highlights my family life and experiences leading up to the time I went off to college.
Showing Love is just me thanking everyone that’s been involved in my life and career.
Overall I think I have accomplished my goal.
I’ve put together a body of work that, in my opinion, achieved “rider status”.
