The
Nassau Music Society sponsored a Members’ Evening at Government House
Saturday night. The concert, expertly managed from its inception to
its conclusion by Simone Fitzcharles, Partner with the Lennox Paton
law firm and Secretary of the Nassau Music Society, was performed by
and for members as well as by representatives of the Bel Canto Singers
and COB music students. It was an eclectic programme, offering something
for everyone.
We
first heard flautist Shavincia Thomas play Chevalier De Saint Georges’
Scena from
Ernestine and Passard’s
Andalouse. Ms.
Thomas is the Nassau Music Society’s most recent scholarship winner.
Both she and her accompanist, pianist Calvin Parker, are COB students.
Three
of Mahler’s very funny dialogue songs in German were offered next
by soprano Anita MacDonald, accompanied by pianist Dion Cunningham:
Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? was followed by
Aus! Aus!
and finally
Lob des hohen Verstands. Prior to singing each song,
Ms. MacDonald provided a short synopsis so that the audience could appreciate
the humour of the selections. Ms. MacDonald is on the Programme Committee
of the Nassau Music Society and also plays French horn for the Bahamas
National Symphony Orchestra.
Trumpeter
B’Angelo Cartwright, a COB music student, was next on the programme
with Handel’s
The Harmonious Blacksmith, accompanied by pianist
Dr. Christy Lee of COB. Dr. Lee is also Vice President, Scholarships
of the Nassau Music Society.
The
Handel was followed by works from the Romantic and Impressionistic periods,
as played by pianist Dion Cunningham of the Bel Canto Singers. We heard
first Chopin’s
Etude Opus 10 No. 3 in E major, and then Debussy’s
prelude
Le vent dans la plaine.
Continuing
with artists from the Bel Canto Singers, next on the programme was soprano
Candace Bostwick, who sang Puccini’s
O Mio Babbino Caro, followed
by Bonds’ arrangement of
He’s Got the Whole World In His Hand.
We look forward to hearing Ms. Bostwick in her role as Bess in Gershwin’s
Porgy and Bess later this year.
Next,
baritone Eldridge McPhee, the Director of the Bel Canto Singers, took
us to Italy with Durante’s
Danza, danza, fanciulla gentile
and then to England with Handel’s recitative and aria
Thy rebuke
hath broken His heart and
Behold, and see if there be any sorrow
from
The Messiah.
Ms.
Bostwick and Mr. McPhee then sang the moving duet
All I Ask from
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
Phantom of the Opera. In all their songs,
they were accompanied by pianist Dion Cunningham.
The
last portion of the programme was devoted to popular and jazz offerings
presented by COB music students. Soprano Shanderia McKenzie, accompanied
by pianist Calvin Parker and double bass player Selah Poitier, sang
Donida’s
I Who Have Nothing,
translated into English from the original Italian. The evening concluded
with pianist Calvin Parker’s arrangement of
The Music Never Stops
for jazz quartet: Bazil Miller on alto sax, B’Angelo Cartwright on
trumpet, Selah Poitier on double bass, and Calvin Parker on piano.
A
food and wine reception provided by Committee Members of the Nassau
Music Society followed, bringing a thoroughly delightful “en famille”
evening to a most delicious close.
