An irreverent take on the holiday movie that is not afraid to poke fun at certain chestnuts that are the cornerstone of the winter season experience.

Celebrate the holidays like a mother.

One of the taglines for this movie: Celebrate The Holidays Like A Mother. Three women who feel under-appreciated and over-burdened by their families decide to rebel against the challenges and expectations thrust open them during the winter holiday season. As they try to redefine how to make the holidays special for their families, they must also host and entertain their own mothers and hopefully discover a way to mature their relationship.

Amy is a mother dealing with her first Christmas as a divorcee with a hope of making it feel normal for her two children when her parents decide to spend the holiday with her and her mother makes the decision to throw a Christmas Eve party at her house. Kiki is a mother finally getting good support from her husband when dealing with their children when her mother decides to spend time with her due to her loneliness and uses the death of her husband as an excuse to overstep certain boundaries Kiki has set. Carla is a single mother finally making an tempt to be a somewhat responsible parent to her son when her mother drops by with ulterior motives and a set of bad habits that could derail Carla’s progress.

A Bad Moms Christmas is a cheeky take on the movies that come out this time of year while still holding to the message of family that they all try to get across. I found this movie better than the original as the humor felt fine tuned to each character and the family of that character which made it feel true in its absurdity. Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon do absolute great jobs as the mothers of the characters played by Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn. Scott Moore and Jon Lucas are able to build on the so-so foundation set in the first movie to create a holiday gem of the sequel that has a strong structure of humor. This movie was able to give its own twist to movies like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation or Bad Santa by playing the holiday tropes with a very modern sensibility. I rate this movie a rating of 3 & 1/2 out of 5.
