A movie based on true events that tells a story that seems like fun and games until it doesn't. One of the taglines for this movie: The CIA. The White House. Pablo Escobar. One Man Played Them All. A former commercial airline pilot becomes a gun runner for a government’s clandestine operation that would lead to him working as a drug smuggler for a notorious cartel. As he is forced to pull double duty for two opposing forces, he must maintain a public image as a legitimate businessman in the town his family resides Barry Seal is a former Trans World Airlines pilot hired by the C.I.A. to fly missions to Central & South America and ended up becoming a drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. Lucy Seal is Barry’s wife who is trying to keep up the appearance of a normal housewife for her family and friends, as her husband becomes more entrenched in the illegal drug trade. Monty Schafer is a case officer for the C.I.A. who employs Barry to fly reconnaissance missions to countries south of the United States which soon escalates to running guns to U.S. allies. Jorge Ochoa is a key founding member of the notorious Medellin Cartel who gambles on Barry’s ability to fly drugs pass the D.E.A. to the United States of America. American Made is a biographical crime film that skims over certain parts of recent history to give the audience the more intense parts of an interesting real life story. This movie breezes along at a brisk pace and delivers a story that informs as it entertains in an inventive fashion. Tom Cruise does an amazing job of making you feel for the character who goes with the flow until he gets in over his head and Domhnall Gleeson gives a cool performance as the government agent rising in the ranks until his superiors decide that he must cut ties with his current operatives. Doug Liman directs in his normal style that delivers a story brimming with enthusiasm and charismatic stars that almost makes you forget the seriousness of the situation. For a bio-pic this motion picture makes use of the time period and subject matter well enough to be enjoyed by almost anyone which softens the blow of the reality involved. I rate this movie a rating of 3 & 1/2 out of 5. In Theaters American Made
