The Madness Begins...

As a rookie vigilante learns a hard lesson when it comes to a criminal she has caught the eye of, she finds out with her mentor that some lines should not be crossed. The situation escalates when a deranged psychopath escapes from a local mental institution where he was imprisoned with the mission to prove a point using the father of the rookie.

Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Batman’s professional friend Commissioner Gordon and also the fledgling vigilante Batgirl who may have bitten off more than she is able to chew with an up and coming criminal. Paris Franz is an upstart crime boss looking to become the most feared mafioso in Gotham City and wanting to cement his reputation as a lady’s man by bedding Batgirl. Batman is the seasoned vigilante of Gotham City who is mentoring Batgirl until circumstances lead him to investigate a threat that could chip away at the foundation of his crime stopping network. The Joker is an insanely twisted criminal mastermind hellbent on proving to Batman that all it takes is one bad day of heartbreaking events increasing exponentially to make anyone fall into madness as he did.

Batman: The Killing Joke proves that less is more as they add an unneeded prologue to this iconic story that completely undermines the motivation of the main character. This has been a bad Summer for animated movies and this feature adds to that legacy by tarnishing DC Entertainment’s reputation of superior animated films based on DC Comics’ archetypal properties. The best thing about this flick is hearing Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and Tara Strong has the voices of Batman, Joker and Batgirl. I was really hoping for more with all the hype that surrounded this project, but it all came to smoke and mirrors after witnessing the final product. I would suggest that anyone who is a fan of the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland to fast forward through the first half of the movie and just watch the last half.

I rate this film a 2 out of 5.

P.S. There is a mid-credit scene that is pure fan service and also makes you wonder if this movie should not have been called Batgirl: The Killing Joke since Batman seems inconsequential.
