Don’t Worry, Summer is Coming...

A lifeguard devoted to protecting his beach butts heads with a brash new recruit hired to improve the image of the property. As they learn to work together guarding beach-goers, they uncover a local criminal plot that could threaten the future of the area under their jurisdiction.

Mitch Buchannon is a lifeguard who eats, sleeps & breathes his line of work and wants to make sure that every lifeguard he is in charge of takes the job just as seriously as he does. Matt Brody is a disgraced two time Olympic gold medal winning swimmer nicknamed the ‘vomit comet’ who is given the lifeguard job as a public relations stunt in lieu of jail time. Summer Quinn is one of the new recruits for the lifeguard program who is a skilled surfer looking to make a difference in her community, but she soon finds herself in a situation she was not trained for. Victoria Leeds is the new owner of the Huntley Club who is suspected of using her business as a front for drug smuggling which she is using to fund a land grab scheme.

Baywatch
is a lighthearted popcorn movie that is a fun watch for fans of the tv series it is based on. This film does have a slight problem with tone as it tries to go in a serious direction at times which betrays the comedic tone it sets up so well in the beginning. It also has a chance to take the movie in areas of adult humor that the tv show could not but seems to chicken out and partially waste the chance it has to use its buxom beauty premise in favor of sophomoric gags. Dwayne Johnson brings his charm, Zac Efron brings his comedic timing, Alexandra Daddario brings her wide-eyed naïveté and Priyanka brings her smolderingline delivery to the production. Seth Gordon does a good job of directing the funny in this motion picture, but it never quite reaches to the high water he set in Horrible Bosses. This movie tries to go the 21 Jump Street route but ends up coming just below the level of 22 Jump Street in its delivery which is still a win.

I rate this movie a rating of 2 & 1/2 out of 5.

P.S. There are bloopers a plenty during the end credits so sit back and have a few extra laughs at the cast’s expense.
