An animated sequel with a lot going on but just enough fun stuff so you don't hold that against it too much...

Hard times ahead! When a former child star has grown-up to become the villainous character he played decades ago it is up to a former super villain to stop his nefarious deeds. When the former villain finds himself out of work due to a botched mission he receives assistance from a relative with details to past he didn’t know.

Felonious Gru is a former super villain working for the Anti-Villain League who is dealing with a mutiny by his once loyal minions and the revelation of a brother he didn’t know he had. Lucy Wilde is an agent of the AVL who finds herself out of a job for protesting her husband’s expulsion from the organization and is agonizing over how to be a good mom his 3 adopted girls. Dru Gru is the twin brother of Felonious who was raised by their father and now wants his brother to show him the ins and outs of being a super-villain like their father. Balthazar Bratt is a former child star obsessed with the super-villain character he played in the 80s and is now focused on world domination using a plan from his cancelled tv show.

Despicable Me 3 is good fun for a the third movie in the main franchise and the fourth movie in the cinematic universe. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio return to write the screenplay and do a nice job of keeping multiple stories going along with the main narrative. This animated film gives you a lot to follow and for the most part they work but the parts that don’t slightly bring down the parts that do. The voice cast is well suited to the characters they play, but I do think it would have been more fun if Dru had been voiced by someone new instead of Steve Carell. Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda and Eric Guillon give us a good sequel that works on different levels for certain members of the family with out overdoing it one way or the other.

The songs in the film, that Pharrell Williams is responsible for, work well in the scenes they are used in and will stay with you after the movie is done. There was a strong Spy Vs. Spy feel to this installment of the computer animated comedy and it was appreciated by those who picked up on the subtle and not so subtle clues. For the parents and grandparents there are enough 80s items showcased during the course of the film to hold some interest and for the very young you have the B story with the minions finding out life without a super-villain can be full of surprises.

I rate this animated movie a 3 out of 5.
