A group of military scientists is joined by an ex-military biologist on an expedition into a mysterious quarantined zone. Once there, they must find out the reason why only one person from previous expeditions has ever returned and how to stop the slow expansion of the quarantined zone.
Lena is a biologist & working university professor who was a former soldier and is drafted on a top secret military expedition into the area of the Shimmer after her husband is the only person ever to return from the area. Anya Thorensen is the paramedic on the team who is unsure about her teammates and her decision to enter the Shimmer. Josie Radek is the physicist in charge of communication and tech for the expedition. Cass Sheppard is the surveyor & geologist on the expedition who is dealing with a personal loss. Dr. Ventress is a psychologist and the leader of the expedition who has been the person in charge of deciding which soldiers made up the teams of the previous expeditions into the Shimmer.
Annihilation is an impressive science fiction motion picture that rewards you for watching with thought provoking concepts that stay with you after the film has ended. The mind-bending visuals of this movie are matched only by the visceral moments of suspense that keep you on the edge of your seat as you await the outcome. Natalie Portman, Gena Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny & Jennifer Jason Leigh do an awesome job of keeping you engaged with the interactions of the characters they play and have you hoping that they all survive the ordeal. Alex Garland does a great job of writing and directing the film in a way that you want to see what comes next in each scene and hold your breath as the tension ratchets up to its inevitable release. This movie makes me want to read the 2014 book by Jeff VanderMeer that it is based on. I found myself thinking of movies like The Thing, The Ruins, The Abyss, Monsters, Alien, Predator & Arrival as I watched to film and began to ponder the different facets of the story. I rate this movie a rating of 4 out of 5.
