No Mas. No Surrender...

The life and times of a boxing champion and the man who helped train him to be the prize fighter he became. A glimpse into both their worlds and what went on behind the scenes of some news worthy international events.

Roberto Durán was the beloved Panamanian professional boxer who grew up from nothing to become one of the most famous athletic figures from his country. Ray Arcel was the revered boxing trainer who was successfully molded Roberto into the boxing powerhouse he became while dealing with personal and professional issues. Carlos Eleta was the wealthy boxing enthusiast who saw the potential for Roberto to become his next money making venture. Sugar Ray Leonard was the WBC welterweight champion from America who Roberto would have to defeat in order to prove to himself and the world that his success was genuine.

Hands of Stone
is a nicely crafted bio pic that takes a look at the trials and tribulations of a man whose fame mirrored that of his country. Both Édgar Ramírez & Robert De Niro give strong performances that are worthy of the legendary sport figures they portray in this film. The surprise performances come from Ana de Armas' fiery portrayal of Roberto Durán’s wife Felicidad Iglesias and Usher Raymond’s subdued charismatic depiction of Sugar Ray Leonard that left the audience wanting more. Jonathan Jakubowicz directs and writes the film in such a way that the boxing is the least important part when compared to the conflict within the fighters and the people who must deal with them on the sidelines. If you are going to this film for the boxing then you will see standard choreography, but if you go with the intent of seeing how someone can self-destruct due to their own hubris then this will entertain you.

I rate this movie a 3 out of 5.
