Nothing Rhymes With Germany...

When a young teen moves to a different country he has to learn a new way of doing things. With the help of his father and his language tutor he will traverse the landscape of growing up in a foreign place.

Morris Gentry is a 13 year old boy who has moved with his father to Heidelberg, Germany and trying to adjust to his new place and his attraction to a girl in the area. Curtis Gentry is the new assistant coach for a local soccer team and is doing his best to raise his son after the death of his wife in a foreign country with different views than he grew up with. Inka is Morris’ German language tutor who is trying to help him fit in to his new surroundings while keeping his father in the loop about any major developments. Katrin is a 15 year old girl who likes the attention of the younger foreign boy but is dealing with her growing relationship with an older musician.

Morris from America is a charming take on the coming-of-age story merged with a nice fish-out-of-water tale. I am glad that the film takes advantage of the opportunity to show the audience that crushes can blossom no matter what part of the world you are in or from, but is also ready to demonstrate that this is not a love story. Craig Robinson & Markees Christmas give great performances as father & son and Carla Juri & Lina Keller have parts that ring true to life as the concerned tutor and the object of affection with her own object of affection. Chad Hartigan shows that both his writing and directing are able to tell a story in an honest way that can be both heart breaking and heart warming. I rate this movie a 4 out of 5.
