Meet The Women You Don’t Know, Behind The Mission You Do...

The story of three female mathematicians of a minority race, who were instrumental in calculating the historic launch and safe return of a national hero to and from space. We see their struggles at work and at home in a climate that would have hindered them if not for their brilliance and determination to see beyond what others had accomplished before them.

Katherine Goble Johnson is a genius mathematician assigned to the Space Task Group at the height of the Space Race between the United States and Russia to get astronauts into space. Dorothy Vaughan is the informal supervisor of the segregated West Area Computers who is determined to stay relevant where she works by learning how to use and teach others the new IBM 7090 system. Mary Jackson is an aspiring engineer who must go to court in order to be granted permission to attend night classes at an all-white school to obtain her degree in engineering. John Glenn is the astronaut who will fly the Friendship 7 mission hoping that it will help NASA gain solid footing in the Space Race and bolster confidence in their capabilities worldwide.

Hidden Figures
is an achievement in film-making due to the inspiring story it depicts in a way that makes it accessible to everyone who watches it. I am a sucker for any motion picture that involves the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, but this had an added distinction of having historical relevance with a glimpse behind the scenes of those who laid the groundwork for space travel today. In my opinion Katherine Goble Johnson should be remembered alongside women like Annie Jump Cannon for her contribution to scientific study. Taraji P.Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe and Kevin Costner are perfectly cast in this film as they bring a veracity in their performances that helps the message of the film sink in. Theodore Melfi does a great job directing the excellent screenplay he co-wrote with Allison Schroeder based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly. This is one of the best movies about this time period that was not made in this time period and will be remember years from now by those it will undoubtedly inspire.

I rate this movie a 5 out of 5.
