Some Secrets Are Too Big To Keep...

An orphaned boy spends years in a forest with a creature thought to be a myth. When he is discovered by people migrating to that area of the forest due to their work, he must decide the best course of action for himself and his friend.

Pete is a young boy who is an orphan after his parents died in a car crash and he has been living with a dragon who lives in the forest that he now calls his home. Elliott is a dragon who lives in the forest and has made Pete a part of his family after finding him when he wandered into the woods, but now he must decide if his friend should stay with him or the humans who have discovered him. Grace Meacham is a forest ranger whose father says he has interacted with a dragon in the forest, but she is more interested in discovering the secret of Pete’s past. Gavin is a lumberjack who works at the lumber mill that his brother owns and he is looking to prove the legend of the dragon that lives deep in the woods.

Pete’s Dragon is a remake that is an improvement on the musical from 1977 in every way shape and form. The fact that it is set in the 80’s instead of the 1900’s gives it a sense of the past but keeps a modern audience able to relate to it. Oakes Fegley & Oona Laurence have nice chemistry on screen for child actors, Wes Bentley & Karl Urban are realistic as brothers with different responsibilities, but it is Bryce Dallas Howard & Robert Redford that steal the show for me as daughter and father finding common ground under extraordinary circumstances. David Lowery does a solid job re-imagining the story of Pete’s Dragon in a way that keeps the heart of the lesser known Disney movie while adding to the story by grounding it somewhat in reality.

I rate this movie a 3 out of 5.
