A theater impresario attempts to save his once-grand theater with a singing competition. As the event becomes more than he can handle, he must trust in the finalists from varying backgrounds to help him pull it off.

Buster Moon is a koala full of optimism who believes he can stop his theater from closing with a singing competition. Eddie Noodleman is a sheep who happens to be Buster’s best friend and business partner, but lacks the same belief in the future of the theater. Rosita is a pig who gave up her dreams of music to become a devoted wife and mother. Mike is a mouse working as a street performer who sees winning the competition as a way to stardom. Ash is a porcupine who is part of a punk rock music group with her boyfriend but when she is chosen and not him, she has to make a hard decision. Meena is an elephant with an incredible voice, but she works behind the scenes because she suffers from severe stage fright. Johnny is a gorilla who wants to perform but is torn due to his father’s wish for him to follow his path.

Sing
is a fun musical that is very safe family animated entertainment that will keep both children and parents occupied. They don’t take any chances when it comes to storytelling or humor which makes it feel like you have seen it before, but there is an attention to the details of being part of a local theater production that ring true. There may not be much imagination put into the design of the anthropomorphic characters on screen, yet there is heart in the talented performances. The voice cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, and does a great job of giving the audience something special in scenes that you can figure out the outcome like you experiencing déjà vu.

Christophe Lourdelet & Garth Jennings do a serviceable job directing this production with nice setups on certain aspects of the animation which do not always pay off well in the story's delivery. This was in no way a bad experience, just an okay undertaking with glimmers of being above average. I rate this movie a 2.5 out of 5.
