The Breakfast Club gets super powers to fight Poison Ivy

Together We Are More...

Five high school students of diverse backgrounds unearth special objects that infuse them with power. They soon find out that they must learn to harness their unique abilities in order to save the world from a threat that is millions of years old.

Jason Scott is the former quarterback of the local high school football team who is destined to become the Red Ranger. Billy Cranston is slightly autistic and bullied at the local high school who is destined to become the Blue Ranger. Kimberly Hart is a former cheerleader and now a social pariah due to an incident she was a part of who is destined to become the Pink Ranger. Trini Kwan is the rebellious member of her family and dealing with her questions about her identity who is destined to become the Yellow Ranger. Zack Taylor is on the verge of dropping out of school while dealing with his bed-ridden mother who is destined to become the Black Ranger. Rita Repulsa is an invader who was the former Green Ranger and intends to create a monster to retrieve the Zeo Crystal which will leave the planet dead.

Power Rangers is a superhero movie reboot that is in many ways better than the material it is based on. I found myself pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the different aspects of the Power Ranger lore that they chose to include in this big budget motion picture. The cast of this film really give it their all and because of those performances you get the feeling that you are watching real people dealing with an extraordinary situation. Dean Israelite improves on his directing skills from Project Almanac and if he keeps getting better I think he will gain a following of people looking forward to seeing what he directs. I will admit that I found the product placement of a specific product a bit ludicrous, but eventually I got more interested in where the story was going than how I was getting there. The main problem with this movie is the fact that it is uneven as it tries to be true to the campy source material while still being as realistic as possible in its serious portrayal.

I rate this movie a rating of 3 out of 5.

P.S. There is a nice mid credit scene that hints at a character destined to become the Green Ranger, but that depends on if this movie gets a sequel.
