Caring Is A Funny Thing

A man suffering from an incredible loss becomes a caregiver to a shut-in dealing with his limited mobility. They decide to take a road trip together in search of landmarks, but end up finding hope and friendship.

Ben is a man dealing with the breakdown of his family by becoming a caregiver but his first assignment may be more than he can handle with his limited amount of training. Trevor is a young man living with muscular dystrophy who yearns to see more of the world than his mother has allowed him to due to his disability. Dot is a mysterious young woman who has decided to hitchhike as a way of getting away from her problems which include a father who has a difficulty getting out of his own way. Peaches is a pregnant woman with a broken down car who is on her way to live with family as her significant other has been redeployed overseas.

The Fundamentals of Caring is based on Jonathan Evison’s novel ‘The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving’ and does a great job of showing a different side to the dynamic of those giving care and those getting care. Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts have a great comedy fluidity and Selena Gomez shows that she has the range to occupy more mature roles in her evolving acting career. Rob Burnett has done a solid job in his second directorial effort and I am looking forward to seeing what he chooses to be his third. I have never read the book this movie is based on, but thanks to this charming film I must admit that I am compelled to check it out at the local library.

I rate this motion picture a 4 out of 5.
