Awaken The King...

A diverse team of explorers are partnered with soldiers to venture deep into an uncharted island. At the start of the mission they encounter a mythic creature that reveals the secret they were sent to uncover.

Bill Randa is a part of the mysterious Monarch organization and has assembled a group of scientists for a fact finding mission to an uncharted island that no one has ever returned from. James Conrad is a former British Special Air Service Captain who served in the Vietnam War and is hired by Bill as a tracker for the expedition on the unknown island. Hank Marlow is a Lieutenant of the 45th Pursuit Squadron who has been stranded on Skull Island for 28 years and befriends the scientists with a hope of getting off the island. Preston Packard is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and the soldier in charge of the Sky Devils helicopter squadron who is hired to transport & protect the scientists.

Kong : Skull Island is an entertaining throwback to the old time B movies of yesteryear with mysterious monsters and a ferocious body count. Let’s just say that most of the people you are introduced to at the start of the movie will not be around by the end of it, but that is part of the fun of watching this kind of film. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and you should not take it too seriously either. I enjoyed the fact that Kong is featured so much in the film and the look of him is more like that of the 1933 version of the character. Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly give the best performances as a soldier desperately looking for a war to win and a man lost in the past trying to return home in modern day. Jordan Vogt-Roberts does a decent job of directing his second film of fiction by combining a monster flick with a period army movie. As I watched this I thought of films like Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and the tv show China Beach, but it also brought to mind films like Princess Mononoke, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and the tv show Lost. It was a nice little adventure that will lead to something bigger and better later down the line.

I rate this movie a 3 out of 5.

P.S. There is an after credits scene that lets us know exactly what the movie is leading to and the type of world we can expect to see an older Kong be a part of in future installments.
