An atmospheric psychological thriller that grounds the fantastic in reality.

Are You Ready For The Truth?

The sole survivor of a devastating train accident is contacted by a mysterious stranger who offers him a bizarre explanation as to why he emerged unscathed. As the survivor valiantly attempts to return to his unfettered life of normalcy, he slowly begins to understand the truth behind the explanation as it threatens to change his perception of reality and the life of his family.

David Dunn is a security guard & a former college football player who quit after a car accident and is now the only survivor of the Eastraill 177 disaster which leads to him meeting Elijah Price who has an unexpected answer. Audrey Dunn is David’s wife who works as a physical therapist and was with him during the the car accident that ended his football career. Joseph Dunn is David’s son who believes what Elijah has told him and is desperate to prove to his father that there is more to him than he currently believes. Elijah Price is comic book theorist & owner of the sequential art gallery Limited Edition who has Type 1 osteogenesis imperfecta with an outrageous reason for why David survived without a scratch.

Unbreakable is an amazingly crafted piece of cinema that slowly leads you deeper into a world where the inconceivable in real, yet grounded to be more palatable for those prone to unbelief. There is a feeling of genuineness to the reality in this film that gives the viewer a slight sense of dread to the outcome of each scene, but a feeling of calm relief is the reward when the whole story is finally revealed. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson give beautifully understated performances that set the tone of the film in a way that softens the blow when the realization of the unexpected hits you by the end. M. Night Shyamalan does some phenomenal writing and directing with this his fourth film while delving into a genre that was considered very niche at the time of this film's release, but much appreciated by fans of the genre. James Newton Howard supplies an award worth score that can perfectly evoke the right emotion in the listener for each scene it is used in while giving the audience an unmistakable sensation of witnessing a true craftsman at work. This is one of the best films about comic book related material that is not based on a comic book and it has a grounded style that has directly and indirectly influenced many other forms of media in the genre. This is a masterwork in subtlety which could be described as a slow burn, but the twist is what makes this motion picture a prime candidate for repeat viewings to see exactly what was right in front of you all along. I rate this film a rating of 4 & 1/2 out of 5.
