NASSAU, The Bahamas – Due to the potential excessive flooding posed by Hurricane Matthew, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, is strongly advising residents in low-lying areas to evacuate and seek the nearest hurricane shelters in their respective areas. According to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology, residents in low-lying areas and on coastal roads should contact their local district administrator or NEMA office to make arrangements for relocation to a hurricane shelter before the onset of the tropical storm force winds. Furthermore, the combination of a dangerous storm surge and large and destructive waves could raise water levels by as much as 10 to 15 ft above normal tide throughout The Bahamas. It is also projected that storm surges will occur 10 to 15 ft. By 11pm Wednesday, residents in New Providence would begin to feel tropical storm force winds from Hurricane Matthew. The following areas are vulnerable to excessive flooding and storm surge as Hurricane Matthew, expected to be a Category 3 storm treks across The Bahamas, with a direct hit for New Providence: · South of Yamacraw Hill Road · South of Pine Crest Drive · South of Zion Boulevard · South of Cowpen Road · Coral Vista · Coral Harbour · Coral Lakes South · South of Adelaide Road · Adelaide Village · South of Frank Watson Boulevard · The western and northwestern end of New Providence including Lyford Cay, Old Bay and vicinity. Residents are being strongly encouraged to seek the nearest shelter or move inland to more secure areas.
