NASSAU, The Bahamas - The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, partially activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), to closely monitor the movements of a severe weather system projected to move over the extreme Northwest Bahamas. In this vein, a green flag was hoisted at NEMA’s office on Gladstone Road and NEMA’s Way to indicate the system is being monitored, to keep the public informed on how it would be impacted by the weather. A core team from NEMA administrative staff and the Department of Meteorology will be stationed at the NEOC to monitor the system and to ensure that proper procedures are followed. On Friday, January 22, 2016, the Met Department issued a severe weather warning for Bimini, Grand Bahama and adjacent waters to those islands, which are located in the northwest Bahamas at 11:20am and then again at 2:20pm. “Observation, radar and satellite imagery continue to show clusters of well organized thunderstorms moving northeastwards over the extreme Northwest Bahamas. “Some of these thunderstorms will be severe at times causing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy downpours, hail and possible waterspout or tornadic activity. “Boaters in the warning area should seek safe harbour and residents in the warning area should stay indoors and away from windows when conditions worsen. Residents should not seek shelter under trees or in water as these can become lightning conductors.” Director of NEMA Captain Stephen Russell said Family Island Administrators were contacted, to ensure that they met with their local disaster committees on their level of preparedness and to have (hurricane) designated shelters open in the event of evacuating low-lying areas. Based on advise from the Met Department, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) closed all schools in Andros, the Berry Islands, Grand Bahama and New Providence today, Friday, 22nd January, 2016.
