Severe weather warning for Grand Bahama and Bimini

Nassau, The Bahamas - The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning with effect from 4:45pm until 6:45pm thursday, April 23, 2015.

A severe weather warning is in effect for Grand Bahama and Bimini and its adjacent waters.

At 04:40pm radar and satellite pictures indicated clusters of thunderstorms moving from the South Florida region eastwards to the area of Bimini and West End, Grand Bahama.

Some of these thunderstorms will be severe at times causing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy downpours, hail and possible waterspout or tornadic activity. Localized flooding could occur in low lying and flood prone areas.

Residents are being asked to remain vigilant and to seek refuge indoors upon seeing any funnel clouds or if weather conditions worsen.

Residents should not seek shelter under trees or in water, as these can become lightning conductors.
