Severe weather warning

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning from 11:50 am until 2:50 pm Sunday 20th April 2014.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in now in effect for Long Island, Rum Cay, and San Salvador and their adjacent waters.

At 11:45am observation, radar and satellite imagery show a cluster of strong thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall associated with pre-frontal activity across the central bahamas. The system is moving toward the southeast as storms generally move in a northeast and east direction.

Some of these thunderstorms will be severe at times causing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy downpours, hail and possible waterspout or tornadic activity. Localized flooding could occur in low lying and flood prone areas during heavy downpours.

Boaters in the warning area should seek safe harbour and residents in the warning area should stay indoors and away from windows when conditions worsen. Residents should not seek shelter under trees or in water as these can become lightening conductors.
