Storm flood damage in Harbour Island, Bahamas

Eleuthera, Bahamas - This video posted to Youtube shows the results of the severe thunder storms on May 5th in Harbour Island, Eleuthera. Most of the footage was shot on Alice Street, which the person filming being pulled through on a flotation by a young male local standing in the water.

Water levels rose half way up doors, and residents lost most of their belongings, including all their vehicles. It all happened within a few hours.

One resident said this was the fourth time he'd been flooded like this since he has been living in the area. "It's usually up to my knees when it floods... but right now it's up to my waist.  We lost everything, refrigeration, everything in the house had been wiped out for the fourth time."

Local resident, Lawrence Thompson Sr. said the residents are attempting to pump out the valley areas where the home are flooded half-way up the locks on the doors. He said some people had to break windows to get out of their home.  Water is said to be 5 to 6 feet high.

"We hope the government will get the message that these folks really need assistance from the government," said Thompson.

Forecast for Wednesday (Bahamas Meteorology Department)

Weather: Cloudy to overcast and windy conditions with widely scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms during the day and into the night.

Winds: SE to SSW at 15 knots over the NW Bahamas and ENE to ESE at 15 to 20 knots into the Central and SE Bahamas

Seas: 3 to 5 feet in the NW Bahamas and 4 to 6 feet in NW Bahamas and 4 to 6 feet in the SE Bahamas.
