Tropical Storm Erika is bigger than Danny was. (NOAA/NASA)

Meteorologist, Wayne Neely: Once again we have a tropical storm (and a potential 'hurricane' over The Bahamas by the weekend) in the 'cross-hairs' of The Bahamas. The remnants of Danny presently over Puerto Rico is forecast to affect the weather over the Central(Exuma, Ragged Island, Cat Island, San Salvador) and Southeast Bahamas(Crooked Island, Acklins, Inagua)...(and to a lesser extent over the NW Bahamas by Thursday afternoon/evening) sometime early on Thursday morning. Bringing with it some severe thunderstorms and heavy showers over these islands.

On the forecast track it looks like it will impact The Turks and Caicos Islands and the SE Bahamas at 2am on Saturday morning as a hurricane and over the Central Bahamas at 2am on Sunday morning as a hurricane and over New Providence and the remainder of the NW Bahamas sometime by Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. I must add here that these are the 'projected track' models which could change by the end of the week so my advice is to pay close attention to all future alerts of this storm and those of you traveling to The Bahamas please continue to monitor the progress of this storm.

News item on Tropical Storm Erika issued by the Bahamas Department of Meteorology forecast office section, at noon Tuesday 25th August 2015.

…Erika showing little change in strength at this time …

At 11:00 am EDT, the center of Tropical Storm Erika was located near latitude 15.2° north and longitude 51.0° west or about 730 miles east of the leeward islands.

Erika is moving toward the west at near 20 mph and a west-northwestward motion at a slightly slower forward speed is expected over the next 24 hours. On this forecast track, the center of Erika will be near the leeward islands Wednesday night and early Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 miles per hour (mph) with higher gusts. Some slow strengthening is possible during the next 48 hours.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.

Residents, particularly in the Southeast Bahamas should continue to closely monitor the movement of this system as Erika has the potential to affect the islands of the Bahamas.

The next news item will be issued at 6:00 pm.
