Grand Bahama Island - With the approach of the winter season, we feel it appropriate to remind
everyone of our wonderful
calender of events for October at the Garden of the
Groves.
Locations for the diverse events at the Garden will be the Labyrinth,
the Garden Cafe Deck as well as the whole Garden during two of the October
events.
Our Garden, Labyrinth and Cafe entertainment will be greatly enhanced this
year by the thoughtful and generous gift of sound and lighting equipment
purchased for the Garden of the Groves by our dear friend and philanthropist,
Jerry Hill. Our sincere thanks from the Garden,
Jerry!
On Saturday, October 18th at 7pm we begin the season with another
fabulous Elden-McGlone Production at the Labyrinth. The evening of
entertainment is called
"Under the Harvest Moon", featuring music, song and
dance. We will be entertained by Lois Seiler's Dance Academy and "Songbirds"
like Dalia Feldman, Susan Sweeting Jensen and others. The evening will end with
big band sounds for your dancing pleasure on the Labyrinth. Tickets are
available at the Garden of the Groves.

On Saturday, October 10th and 11th at 6 pm the Garden will present another "First" -
Moving Theatre! Jackie Dack, the director of the Lucaya Youth Theatre
Society (LYTS) promises an exciting evening of
"Shakespeare in the Garden"
presented by her students. During this production the audience will be following
the actors throughout the Garden rather than sitting theatre-style! Jackie has
taken her Shakespeare students through gruelling rehearsals twice a week.
Profits from this event will be applied to further education of children in
Performing Arts.

On Saturday, October 17th, beginning at 12 noon, we will have our first
Octoberfest at the Garden Cafe. Julie and her staff will prepare hearty German
dishes like pork roast, sauerkraut, red cabbage, bratwurst and more until 6pm. You may
wash these down with our local Sands, brewed by a German brewmaster. We have
even sent for merry German sing-and-sway-along tunes from Germany!
On Saturday, October 24th, from 1pm until 5pm we will celebrate once again
"God's Creatures in the Garden" with the afternoon
Blessing of the Animals
around St. Francis statue. There will also be activities for the children like
face painting, pony rides etc.throughout the afternoon. Food specials will be
offered at the cafe and all proceeds will benefit the Grand Bahama Humane
Society!

Saturday, October 24th, from 8am until 10am will be our
Birdwalk. During
this time of the year, birding at the Garden becomes especially exciting as new
winter residents and migrants arrive daily. You never know if you find a "lifer"
(a species you see for the first time in your life) during our birdwalk. So join
us, even if you never birded before - we are sure you will enjoy the beauty and
solitude of the morning immersing yourself in nature!
Friday, October 30th, 5 - 6pm

Saturday, October 31st, from 8am until 2pm. We will be conducting our
monthly Plant Nursery Sale, a wonderful opportunity to purchase inexpensive,
home-grown, healthy plants for your yard and garden. We have over hundred palm
trees such as Washingtonia, Adonidia, Areca, Alexandra and Coconut. All are
offsprings of those in the Garden where some have attained heights of 30 feet.
You may select from hardwood trees like Horseflesh, West-Indian Almond, Guinep,
Gumelemi, Java Plum and Tamarind. Or why not plant our National Flower, the
Yellow Elder, as a showy bush or small tree in your garden? Our staff will point
out those plants that are especially attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds,
like Firecracker, Lantana, Firebush and others. Drive right up to our plant
nursery by following the sign off Midshipman.
