Freeport, Grand Bahama - Over the past five Saturdays art students were inspired by the beautiful
scenery at Garden of the Groves while their instructor, Angelika
Siska, lectured and advised them how to use their paint brushes with
acrylics on canvas to create their own master pieces in nature.
Angelika is a long-time resident of Grand Bahama and a well known artist in
Germany and the United States where she has exhibited in art shows. Titles of her
recent exhibitions in Germany and Kentucky have been "Butterflies, Blossoms
and Landscapes" and local art students are very fortunate to be given the
opportunity to share in Angelika's expertise. This is the second year that
Angelika has given of her time and talent to conduct an art workshop at the
Garden for art and nature enthusiasts...
Freeport, Bahamas - During the recent months the Garden has added several new animal
attractions and we would like to introduce two of them to our friends and
visitors.
A
flock of White-cheeked Pintails have become quite at home at the Garden
of the Groves. They are commonly called Bahama Ducks and they were
recently donated to the Garden by Mr. Pericles Maillis on behalf of the
Bahamas National Trust.
There
is the new Bahamian Raccoon Exhibit which has been placed in the
childrens' playground as the younger set is especially attracted to
these little creatures! Raccoons look cuddly but are quite fierce and
aggressive when handled. They are clever and immediately associate
humans with food when one approaches the enclosure...

Marilyn Laing who has worked in early childhood education for over sixteen years
and is now a certified tour guide at the Garden of the Groves.
The program will run from January to December featuring an interesting
topic each month. Subjects for study include butterflies, native trees, insects,
composting, birds and planting a vegetable garden. Here at the Garden students
will have a classroom session featuring the topic of the month, a walk about to
further enhance the topic and simple activities like coloring, crafts or puzzles
to recap the lesson learned...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - The Garden hosted a number of events last week which is an indication that
more and more organizations, companies and individuals chose this beautiful
natural setting to enhance important events. Bahamian artist Eddie Minnis also stopped by last week.
1) The Rand Memorial Hospital celebrated the retirement of Nurse Christine
Higgs at the Garden of the Groves who had
dedicated 34 years of her life to the nursing profession.
2)
The YMCA
Waverunners Swim Club held its annual awards presentation on the cafe deck
overlooking the ponds and waterfalls.
and 3) Grand Bahama Nature Tours and Garden of the Groves celebrated their second
annual Christmas party together at the Garden. Both companies are very fortunate
to have had to increase their staff this year due to more frequent cruise ship
calls to the island...
Freeport, Bahamas - The Garden of the Groves came alive with the spirit of Christmas this past
weekend. Over 30 local arts and crafts vendors were showcasing their products,
enticing the public to get a head start on early Christmas shopping. The displays
ranged from jewelry, cakes, cookies, fine chocolates, artwork, soaps and
lotions, painting, metal sculptures and much more. The Garden's own New England
style shopping complex was also displaying their finest in straw, wood crafts,
fragrances, books, candles, coconut jewelry and high quality logo-wear.
It was an especially festive occasion for the children who would even sit
still for Tiffany Dennison's ever so popular face-painting. The little ones
could hardly wait to see Santa Claus pull up in his electrically powered
"sleigh". Santa then sat in his elaborate peacock chair to receive the children
and listened to their wishes for Christmas which also included a couple of
complaints about gifts they had received last year!

Christmas is now so
near, and after our first anniversary of the 'Heart of Grand
Bahama', the Garden of the Groves is happily repeating the successful
pre-Christmas events of last year.
December 5th we have St. Nicholas
in the Garden; then our
Labyrinth Party 'Heralding Christmas' on Saturday, December 19th; and we are open on Christmas day. Look inside this article for full details...
At
the Garden of the Groves there is something for everyone. Movies and concerts during dinner; delicious
fresh home-cooked gourmet food; great drinks and wines; expert
friendly services; excellent facilities and even personal
transportation for the less agile! The Garden of the Groves is a wonderful place to complete or start your Christmas shopping!
Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas - You would not necessarily associate the Garden of the Groves with shopping,
however, the quaint pastel-colored Abaco style cottages filled with local arts
and crafts are fast becoming a favourite on the Garden tour with cruise ship
passengers, visitors and residents.
The idea for this type of shop design came from Ed Gates of Garden of the
Groves who imagined that patrons to the Garden would enjoy a step back in time
by seeing the typical New Plymouth or
Hopetown home design which reminded him of his childhood days in Abaco. His
vision also included artisans that would be producing their items on the store's
shady patio where shoppers would be able to watch them as well as engage in
conversation and learn about local crafts...
Grand Bahama Island - Friends and Members of the Garden turned out on a mild late summer evening
last week to celebrate the first anniversary of the "New" Garden of the Groves.
The festivities began at the chapel where Helen Hamilton, her sons Mike and
Jim and family friends gathered to unveil a plaque dedicated to the late Leon
"Ham" Hamilton who built the chapel in the early seventies. Michelle Hanson of
Garden of the Groves opened the ceremony with a prayer of thanks. Mrs. Barbara
Chester, facilitator and benefactor of the Labyrinth at the Garden thanked the
Hamilton family for their contribution to the chapel and remarked that the chapel had been
the only structure in the Garden that had never suffered major damage during
hurricanes and storms over the past 35 years - no doubt a tribute to the
integrity of the construction by Mr. Hamilton. She then invited Mrs. Hamilton to
unveil the plaque which was followed by a presentation of a beautifully white
and pink grafted Desert Rose to Mrs. Hamilton by Michelle...
Grand Bahama Island - If you haven't visited the
Garden Cafe and Bar at the Garden of the Groves
recently, it is time to go! The cafe has become a popular gathering spot for the
community. Julia Ryan and her staff prepare succulent entrees on the grill with
the freshest of salads.
There are the old favourites like
Salmon, Steak, Bratwurst and Burgers but
on Friday night specials are being offered. There is
Flank Steak or Spicy
Chicken served on a delicious salad of baby greens, spinach, grapes, kiwi,
strawberries, alfalfa sprouts, snappy peas, tossed in an olive oil and orange
dressing. Barbecue Ribs have also become a favourite on Friday evenings served
with potato salad or a choice of
Greek, Caesar or Garden salad...
Grand
Bahama Island - It has been a year that the Garden of the Groves was re-opened after many
months of restoration.
Friday, October 30th we celebrate our anniversary!
It's been quite the month at the Garden of the Groves!
Here is a review of all the wonderful things that took place in October.
From the production of "Shakespeare in the Garden", which was also videoed on location, to the music and dance review of "Under the Harvest Moon", there is always lots to do and see at the Garden. In October we enjoyed Migratory Bird Day, Oktoberfest, and we blessed our local animals during "God's Creatures in the Garden", a fundraiser for the Grand Bahama Humane Society...
Freeport, Grand Bahama - The Humane Society of Grand
Bahama welcomed Fall again this year by holding “God’s Creatures
in the Garden” on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Garden of the Groves.
The event was in honour of World Animal Day (October 4th),
the day set aside to celebrate animal lives in all forms all over the
World and their relationship with humankind. It is also the Feast
Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals and the
Environment, and observed worldwide with a Blessing of the Animals.
There could be no better setting than the Garden of the Groves for such
an occasion, full of warmth and life.
Those attending enjoyed a memorable
afternoon with something for everyone in the tranquil ambiance of the
Garden. Upon arrival a stop that was immediately made by many
was in the parking lot where HSGB Staff and Volunteers held a car wash...
