BNT condemns killing of sea turtles in Grand Bahama - Mar 16, 2018 - 6:00:59 PM

The Bahamas National Trust condemns the killing of the sea turtle in Grand Bahama.  We commend the officers of the various agencies who coordinated the arrest of the three people responsible for the capture and brutal slaughter of a loggerhead turtle last week in Grand Bahama.

The 2009 ban on the harvest of sea turtles was enacted to protect these species, all of which are endangered. The effort led jointly by several NGOs with the support of the Bahamian public is part of a global conservation effort to protect these charismatic animals...

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama, the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest said that while he’s aware of all the talk among the public about the $4 billion oil refinery project by Oban Energies, he urged Bahamians – particularly Grand Bahamians – to focus on the benefits such a project will bring to Grand Bahama.

Officials of the Government of The Bahamas and Oban Energies on Monday signed the Heads of Agreement for a $4 billion project planned for East Grand Bahama.

The signing took place less than five days after Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis announced in the House of Assembly that the Cabinet of the Bahamas had given Oban Energies the go-ahead to commence the process that will lead to construction of an oil refinery and oil storage facility in Grand Bahama...

A little over 6 months ago, executives of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA), unveiled its Capital Arena Initiative, a grant funding project, to assist aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners. This week, the Port will announce the 19 finalists set to compete in GBPA’s Capital Arena, for a chance to receive up to $15,000 to start or grow their business.

GBPA’s Capital Arena Initiative seeks to introduce a minimum of 4 new businesses into the local economy annually. According to Ian Rolle, GBPA President, the Port hopes to identify the best business ideas local entrepreneurs have to offer and assist with funding and support for these businesses to flourish...

Copper thieves disrupt service for BTC’s Customers - Dec 20, 2017 - 5:16:42 PM

Shortly after 8 am on December 20, officials at the Bahamas Telecommunications Company discovered what appeared to be evidence of copper theft at BTC substation on East Atlantic Drive. The actions of the culprits involved caused significant damage to the company’s fiber connectivity resulting in service outages for commercial and residential customers in the surrounding areas including the Rand Memorial Hospital, Grand Bahama Power, Paradise Games and up to 110 residential customers in nearby communities who will likely remain without fixed and broadband services for a minimum timeframe of three hours...

Like many Bahamian events the 2017 Grand Bahama Technology Summit began with a prayer and ended with a party. In between a plan started to emerge for the revitalization of Grand Bahama as a hub for technology and innovation. Presentations from leaders from business, government, and academia, along with Bahamians working for high tech companies in the US, were both pragmatic and inspirational.
