Freeport, Bahamas - On Friday December 3, 2010,
Grand Bahama Port Authority Honorary Chairman, Sir Jack Hayward held a press conference with two local construction companies to announce the $4 million dollar construction of a bridge over the Lucayan Waterway.
Expressing great concern for the people living in the Eastern end of the island, Sir Jack said the Casuarina Bridge is forty years old and was not built to the best standards. He continued on to say "we've always worried about the Casuarina Bridge. It's the only contact over the waterway and should the Casuarina Bridge collapse, we would have two islands - East and West Grand Bahama; and the poor blighters living on the East side, unless they can swim, will be cut off from the center shops, the harbour, airport, medical facilities, their place of work ... they will be isolated."
Sir jack also said, "It always worries me because although we put a 30 ton limit on the bridge we know that that has been exceeded by sometimes 50 tons."
However he said the new reserve, secondary spare bridge connecting Grand Bahama Island will be a super highway connecting the people of settlements from High Rock and McLean's Town and that the students and faculty of the new northern campus of the College of the Bahamas could commute with greater ease.
"I apologize for the delays, they haven't been
caused by me, they've been a question of discussing it all between the
partners of DEVCO (Grand Bahama Development Company) and LUSCO (Lucaya
Services Company), but I'm happy to say that it's going to go ahead," Sir Jack said.
Sir Jack further said, "It was agreed with our Chinese partners
(LUSCO) that it would be a two-lane bridge ... There will be one lane
going west and one lane going east, there will be no traffic jams. I
admit there will be a slight squeeze from the four-lane Grand Bahama
Highway ... The Casuarina Bridge is a four lane bridge but really with
the amount of traffic a two lane is adequate."
The bridge will be constructed by two companies – Waugh Construction
and Albacore Construction – at a cost of approximately $4 million.
