Freeport, Grand Bahama - The following is a statement by Chervita Campbell:

It is important that we continue to stand on principle and to strive for perfection in our public lives and in the life of our communities. I wish to quote Hugh White former United States politician who was also president pro tempore of the Senate in 1832 who said:

“When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power.”

I wish to unequivocally state that I was asked to step down as Chief Counselor not because of any malfeasance, but a breach of protocol.

This mistake of protocol was then exploited for selfish political ambitions of some and wider partisan political design of others which became clear for all to see in the recent general elections.

Proof that there was no malfeasance on my part is the fact that I remained as an active and voting member of the Freeport City Council after demitting the chair.
Further proof of non-malfeasance on my part and my continuance as an active member of the Freeport City Council thereafter, are the following accomplishments and wider community service before and subsequent to my demitting the chair as Chief Counselor:

1. My attendance to Caribbean Association of Local Government Authorities (CALGA) in October 2016 representing the Bahamas and my election as secretary of CALGA for the year 2016- to present

2. In my capacity as secretary of the Caribbean Association of Local Government Authority (CALGA), my seeking to have Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF) choose Freeport Grand Bahama as its next meeting site with well over 20 Commonwealth Countries in attendance

3. My Participation in consultation of Local Government Reform and the strategies for the introduction of Local Government to New Providence

4. I Serve as Chairperson of GB Regatta and Homecoming Committee (2014 – to Present)

5. I led educational sessions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the Local Government in Eleuthera (May 2016)

6. I led session on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) in Trinidad in (March 2016)

7. Wrote Proposal on Waste Separation Pilot Programme for Caribbean Local Government Forum (CLGF)

8. Re-introduced Summer Employee program after a six year absence with the city of Freeport

10. Implemented Special Needs Summer Camp for children

11. Oversaw the upgrade of the Electrical System at the Independence Park

12. Oversaw the settlement of Outstanding Payments to former employees of the local government board.

13. Oversaw the construction of sub-division walls in Coral Reef and Imperial Park.

14. Collaborated with the Road Traffic Department to ensure proper road signs were erected and the employment of crossing guards.

The foregoing I trust helps to shade light and clarity on my demitting the chair and my role as chief counselor, it worthy to note that subsequent to my demitting the chair as chief counselor, no major project undertaking has been executed by the Freeport City Council to date.

I would like to thank the members off the public who gave me words of encouragement and prayed for my strength and protection from God almighty.
We live as free people in the Bahamas and with freedom comes responsibility with responsibility comes action and with action comes judgement, judgement
can however sometimes be flawed since we are mere fallible humans, hence I would like to quote Mahatma Gandhi:

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”.
In so doing let us continue to serve the people of Freeport irrespective of their political affiliations, as we seek our return as a vibrant and growing society. Let us therefore take hold of the power of the future that awaits us all with the wisdom gained from the past. May God bless and protect us all.
