Former Freeport Inn Hotel complex to be demolished
By The Ministry of Grand Bahama

The Minister for Grand Bahama would like to advise the general public
that the demolition of the former Freeport Inn Hotel Complex, located
next to the Rand Memorial Hospital on East The Mall Drive, Freeport,
Grand Bahama, will commence on Monday, September 15th, 2014 at 7:00
a.m., and continue until the end of October of this year.
The
Minister held a press conference today along with Mr. Herbert Brown,
Managing Director of The Public Hospital’s Authority and Mr. Lou
Carroll, General Manager of Sanitation Services, whose organizations
have and will play a vital role in this upcoming exercise.
The
government of The Bahamas determined that the cost for renovations of
these buildings would exceed that of the construction of new buildings
of similar sizes. In addition, over the past two years, these buildings
have been vandalized, and currently pose an environmental health hazard
to the surrounding residential and business communities.
After
consultation with the Ministry of Health, The Public Hospital’s
Authority, The Ministry of Works and the Grand Bahama Port Authority, a
complete structural engineering assessment was done, which revealed that
the four (4), three (3) storey structures on the property were
structurally unsound, and are in gross violation of building codes.
The relevant authorities have been apprised of this exercise and all
necessary safety precautions will be put in place. We are soliciting
the cooperation, understanding and support of the business community, as
well as those who live in close proximity to this property, throughout
the process of demolition and debris removal.
