Freeport, Bahamas - The following is a statement by the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Michael Darville:

The vendors in the Farmer’s Market, have long petitioned the government for assistance with making their environment more modern and appealing. This administration has responded to these concerns, and in partnership with The Grand Bahama Port Authority and The Grand Bahama Power Company, has moved vendors to a temporary location in the downtown area, on which they have been allowed to operate rent free, until the project completion date, which is projected for November, 2015.

It has come to my attention as a result of communication from The Ministry of Works, and representatives from The Department of Agriculture, that the company contracted to provide temporary housing for the vendors withdrew its services yesterday, as a result of an administrative oversight, thus causing great alarm. However, this situation was immediately addressed, and the tents will be re-erected this evening. We apologize for the inconvenience caused, and anticipate no further complication for the remaining tenure of the project.

I wish to thank the government’s partners for assisting with this project; and assure vendors that within a few weeks, they will have a more modern, physically appealing and safe working environment.
