Grand Bahama Island
- After an attempt to protest last week in front of the Grand Bahama
Power Company without a permit, a group of Grand Bahamians were made to leave by the
police. The same group led by Troy Garvey reconvened this morning to
officially protest, this time with permit in hand.
The group was expressing their concern over what they refer to as
Grand Bahama
Power Company's
high
prices, the accountability of deposit funds, power surges and
estimation billing. Despite a recent decision in a town meeting two
weeks ago whereupon the power company promised to remove Friday
disconnections and provide a two-day disconnection notice via phone calls.
Troy Garvey told The Bahamas Weekly, "This group of investors are not
for the people. We are calling on the Prime Minister to meet with us
and remove this company. We realize we need investors, but we should
have investors that are for the people and have the people's interest
at heart. This company has made it difficult for Grand Bahamians
to maintain a decent lifestyle."
"We want the Prime Minister to stop and cancel the investment contract with the Grand Bahama Power Company".
The group has committed to continue protesting every Friday until they feel that the situation is resolved.
