Freeport, The Bahamas - Tourism stakeholders express hope filled confidence that Grand Bahama is making the right strides to sustain tourist related activities following Hurricane Dorian.

The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board (GBITB) asserts that the island’s tourism products is one of the critical mechanisms necessary to stimulate the economy as residents and businesses position themselves to recover from Hurricane Dorian.

Ian Rolle, Acting Chairman for the GBITB and President of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited, explains, “The enthusiasm and active role that tourism stakeholders and providers within our organization have demonstrated is very promising.  Together, there is a spirit of resilience that is vital to our island’s on-going recovery efforts.”  Rolle confirmed that following the group’s meeting, there was positive news that many tourism and hospitality providers were engaged in delivering a variety of products and services.  He notes, “Currently, there are a number of businesses delivering tourism related products and services on a limited basis and this is admirable as our recovery efforts remain on-going.”

Rolle adds, “Despite some operational challenges, there is a collective energy fuelling the commitment of tour operators, restaurant and bar owners in addition to hotel properties to create the best possible experiences for guests visiting the island of Grand Bahama.”

The GBITB assists the Government of The Bahamas in the promotion of Grand Bahama island as a tourist destination. It also represents the private sector in marketing its respective properties, which have partnership with the Board and are members.  Board member, Erica Gates and owner of Grand Bahama Nature Tours says, “Throughout my time on the Board, we have been focused towards promoting and creating memorable experiences for visitors and guests to Grand Bahama.  We know that there is something special about this place and now we must share our unique product offerings, so that experiences are filled with quality interactions to reflect our resilience and strength after Hurricane Dorian’s impact.”

Gates adds, “Our island has been transformed by an incredible natural disaster exacerbated by climate change  but our resilient spirit affirms that Grand Bahama is open for tourist business.”

The Board’s commitment is to collaborate with key partners including The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the Grand Bahama Port Authority, the Grand Bahama Utility Company, the Grand Bahama Power Company, the National Emergency Management Authority and other relevant local agencies to demonstrate to the global community that the island’s restoration remains a singular goal with an enthusiasm to receive tourist and stimulate the economy.

The group is satisfied by disciplined efforts of Grand Bahama Vacations to disseminate key updates about the island’s air and sea ports, hotel operations, restaurant opening and other hospitality related services.  Rolle says, “We are evidently committed to delivering the best tourism product because this helps us to restore hope and rebuild Grand Bahama.”  He concludes, “It remains heartening that many Grand Bahama Tourism and hospitality providers are eager to contribute to the island’s economic sustainability, as we seek to rebuild and maintain the best quality of life for our community.”
