Port Discusses Tourism & Trade Opportunities with Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce

Grand Bahama – Partnership and collaboration to promote economic growth between the city of Freeport and Houston, Texas were topics of discussion, as members of the Greater Houston Black Chamber of Commerce (GHBCC) met with executives at The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) earlier this week.

Derek Newbold, Sr. Manager of Business Development and Invest Grand Bahama hosted the visiting delegates, sharing specific insight into the island’s tourism and industrial sectors, during a brief presentation to the group.

“Tourism has been the primary breadwinner of The Bahamas’ economy’ for many years, but there remains tremendous opportunity for growth and diversification within the sector,” Newbold stated. “GBPA and the Invest Grand Bahama promotional unit are actively promoting Freeport as a premier destination for Medical & Wellness Tourism, Edu-Tourism, Faith-based and Sporting Tourism,” he shared.

“Further, by capitalizing on our proximity to the US mainland, and competitive provisions under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement (HCA), Freeport has experienced significant industrial growth and development, thereby earning its mark as the ‘Industrial Capital of The Bahamas’,” he added.

“We are pleased to welcome you to Grand Bahama Island, and look forward to working with the GHBCC in the future, as we promote the benefits to investing in Grand Bahama. There is indeed significant potential for linkages between our two cities. We hope to build a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship, which promotes growth opportunities and goodwill between both our economies,” Newbold concluded.

The delegation of eight, led by Ms.Vernita Harris, Board Chair of the GHBCC, was visiting Grand Bahama on a three day trade visit. Prior to their meeting with GBPA, the group paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville. Ms.Vernita Harris was also the keynote speaker at the Chamber’s monthly luncheon on Wednesday afternoon at the Pelican Bay.
