Grand Bahama, Bahamas - The first annual Turkey Trot held by Lucaya International School brought out over 225 participants who helped raise over $4,000 for the Grand Bahama Children’s Home. "I am hugely impressed by the support we have had for this year’s LIS Turkey Trot fun run and walk,” said Lee Rawlinson, LIS Science Head and Event Coordinator. “LIS has supported the Children's Home for the last few years and we decided to plan a fun run to open up our fundraising event to the wider public which has proved to be a great success. I hope the event next year is even bigger!"

LIS middle school student Clement Knowles charges ahead of the pack for the first annual 1K Turkey Trot challenge.

Held on Saturday at 9am in the Lucaya area, adjacent to Banana Bay restaurant, runners lined up in bright green shirts donated by Royal Star Assurance to compete in the 5k run or walk. “It was a very hot day for December,” said Sarah Kirkby, GB Children’s Home Executive and participant, “but each runner and walker has given this race their best effort – I can’t get over all the children that have participated today! LIS continues to demonstrate to this community the joy of giving back and they are teaching their children to be wonderful philanthropists.”

Overall winner for the race was Davide Cuccurullo, an IB student at the International School, who was closely followed by fellow students and lots of very fit moms. Winners of each age category received a turkey from BWA for their holiday tabels. This included the younger participants who entered the 1k run won by Clement Knowles (12) and Tenniya Martin (9).

Davide Cuccurullo heads towards the finish line as the winner of the first LIS Turkey Trot!

100% of the funds raised by the participants will go to the Grand Bahama Children’s Home as the event t-shirts, printing, venue, advertising, etc., were all paid for by sponsors solicited by Rawlinson. “I have to admit that at first I was a bit overwhelmed by what goes in to organising an event like this, but the my fellow teachers and friends have supported me all the way. It’s wonderful to see all the work pay off for a great cause.”
