Freeport, GBI, Bahamas— The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board (GBITB) — Bahamas Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA) followed through on a commitment made to the Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board - to assist towards the long-term restoration of tourism affected areas, Post Hurricane Matthew on Grand Bahama.
On Thursday, June 8, 2017, during the Board of Directors meeting of the GBITB, Mrs. Suzanne Pattusch, Executive Vice President of the Bahamas Hotel & Tourism Association made a financial contribution to the Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board on behalf of the Association and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association. The donation was made to further assist with the restoration efforts of Tourism related areas on Grand Bahama Island.
In a statement issued by CHTA on February 25th, 2017, stated “Recognizing the considerable hardship and damage which Haiti and part of the northern Bahamas faced in the aftermath of the hurricane, CHTA President Karolin Troubetzkoy called upon fellow hoteliers in the region to respond to the association’s call for support.” The statement went on further to state that “CHTA developed a fundraising initiative through online auction channel CharityBuzz.com, with which CHTA previously collaborated on a relief and recovery project for Dominica. Regional hoteliers donated room nights for the auction to benefit residents in Haiti and The Bahamas, some of whom continue to struggle to put their lives back in order.”
Chairman Ellison “Tommy’ Thompson thanked the BHTA for the contribution and advises that “in consultation with the BHTA, we have identified areas in which the funds will be used.” He went on further to state that, “The funds will be used towards addressing long-term improvements to those related areas affected in the Tourism Industry”.
Grand Bahama Island was one of the hardest hit Islands of the Bahamas by Hurricane Matthew on October 6, 2016. Currently, forty one percent of the total hotel room inventory is open for business. Memories Grand Bahama and Grand Lucayan Breakers Cay remain closed, representing the majority of hotels rooms on Grand Bahama.
The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board in partnership with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism continue to promote the destination, with focused attention on the current available hotel rooms and attractions. Specific focus is being placed on the Ecotourism sector along with Boating/Fishing Market segments, as well as, the many Festival and Events hosted by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.
