Freeport, Grand Bahama - “I refuse to stand idle and see what happens next," was Barrington Mackey’s response when asked why did he decided to become a candidate in the June 23rd Local Government Election.

With a passion for the youth development and a desire to serve, the community organizer has formed an alliance with Mr. Solomon Morley a current councilor for the Marco City Constituency to contest the upcoming election.

As members of the council they will focus on building stronger communities by:
  • Encouraging and supporting community organized activities.
  • Organizing community meetings so that their specific concerns could be expressed
  • Engage the Grand Bahama Port Authority on community development and infrastructural concerns
  • Partner with churches and established organizations to develop wholesome activities for youth and seniors.
A product of the Pioneer’s Loop/East Coral Estate community Mr. Mackey has seen the negative effect of what he calls a shift in focus by the council.

“I think the council has moved away from community building and is more focused on infrastructural projects and festivals” he continued. “While these are necessary services community building must always be seen as the council’s main focus.”

He also believes that more attention on community building can be the solution to many of the social challenges we are faced with in our country. Mackey is the founder and past president of the Pioneer’s Loop Neighborhood Association which successfully lobbied for the local park to be named the Richard Gaitor Park and also for the Freeport City Council to take responsibility for the maintenance of that park. They also organized various youth activities and the annual Pioneer’s Loop Block Party on the park.

“I’m doing this to be an example and source of inspiration to generations to come.”

Barrington is excited about this opportunity to serve and promises representation that will be beneficial to all. He can be reached by telephone at 602-0595 or 646-8358; on facebook at Morley & Mackey for Marco City; Twitter @m&mformarcocity and e-mail at morleyandmackey@gmail.com.
