Believing that “service is our best teacher,” Ms
Chervita Campbell has put her name forward as a candidate for Marco City to
Freeport’s local government, stating her reason for running is to bring
increased action and communication to the communities of Marco City and by extension
to Freeport. “I feel the role of a City Council member should be one of
listening to what the needs of the community are and then being active in
addressing those needs.” She also believes it is also the
responsibility of the council to reach out to the community through open and
honest communication and be accessible to the community to hear and address
their needs.
“I am the type of person who wants to be
involved in helping to get things done. I can’t just be a spectator, waiting
for others to get things done that I’d liked to see happen. I believe that if you want it, it’s up to you
to make it happen for a better community and lifestyle.”
A graduate of Kent State University and
Bethune-Cookman College
, and a former
Department of Social Services employee who worked with the elderly, Campbell
feels she can make a difference in Marco City and Freeport’s direction and
growth. “Growth can be very challenging
for any community. Through my involvement in various clubs, projects and through
coaching numerous sports teams, my interest is helping shape policies and decision-making
as Freeport grows. I want to be directly
involved in ensuring recreational and wellness assets in the community are a
part of a larger effort to continue enhancing our ‘small city’.”
Campbell was instrumental in supporting the
Spay and Neuter Program with Grand Bahama Humane Society, Reach-Out Ministry,
High School Deportment Award, Jr. Sailing / Regattas and Junkanoo; and feels
that as a candidate for Marco City her main focus would be on the nuts and bolts of local
government:
infrastructure, educational development, and public safety
which are to
:
·
Promote
Neighborhood Watch and Urban Renewal programs to keep our communities
safe.
·
Encourage
our community parks are utilized in a safe and friendly environment.
·
Enhance
the community after-school programs at Richard Gaitor Park and Wellington
Ferguson Community Centre.
·
Continue
dialog with the Grand Bahama Port Authority regarding their involvement of
community development and infrastructure enhancement.
·
Partner with churches,
civic, and other organizations to expand community outreach and youth
development programs.
·
Upgrade various parks
throughout Marco City.
·
Assist the ‘Keep Grand Bahama
Clean’ program in rebuilding community pride, backyard gardening, and clean
yards.
