On April 29th, 2017, EARTHCARE Eco Kids went to Williams Town Beach where they cleaned the beach of pollution in the form of Marine Debris. Gail Woon explained the importance of the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day that EARTHCARE has been involved with for the past 30 years. The EARTHCARE Eco Kids were diligent during their beach cleanup gathering approximately 150+ lbs of marine debris.
On May 6th 2017, the EARTHCARE Eco Kids learned about Habitat Destruction/Restoration. Gail Woon, EARTHCARE Founder and a Director of Save The Bays taught the kids about the various habitats that are found in the country. She highlighted various examples of unsustainable habitat destruction such as the coastal degradation caused by the Baker’s Bay development on Guana Cay and the mangrove and coral reef destruction due to Resorts World Bimini. The group travelled to Paradise Cove where they learned about Habitat Restoration. At Paradise Cove they were informed about the Reef Ball Project where reef balls have been anchored offshore in order to protect the shoreline and facilitate reef growth. At Paradise Cove the EARTHCARE Eco Kids received their Completion Certificates.
From Paradise Cove the EARTHCARE Eco Kids visited the Heritage site, Fern Gully and Josey’s Cave in Holmes Rock. Savanna Gibson and Havana Gibson, EARTHCARE Eco Kids Team Leaders explained that this cave site was used in the past as a hurricane shelter. To celebrate the students’ completion of the program, the EARTHCARE Eco Kids shared a lunch catered by Lucky’s at Lover’s Beach.
EARTHCARE would like to thank our sponsors, Kevin Tomlinson Academy, H. Forbes Charter, Tyrie Moss, Audrey Jolly, both EARTHCARE Eco Kids Facilitators and the parents/guardians who without their support this programme would not be possible.
