Eighteen Freeport Students Awarded Scholarships by American Women’s Club

Freeport, Grand Bahama - The Grand Bahama American Women’s Club (GBAWC) awarded 18 outstanding high school students with academic scholarships, and ten community programs with financial gifts during their annual Awards Dinner at Ruby Swiss Restaurant May 6th.

More than 80 club members, scholarship recipients, parents and representatives of the Rand Nature Center, the Salvation Army, and the Sailing Club filled the popular restaurant. Eighteen high school students from Bishop Michael Eldon, Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Academy, Sunland Baptist Academy, Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy and St. Paul’s Methodist College received the scholarships based on their academic excellence and extracurricular activities.

Ten programs supporting children’s summer camps, the environment and prostate cancer awareness were given gifts made possible through the Club’s 2019 – 2019 fund raising efforts.

The University of the Bahamas’ Veronica Ferguson gave an entertaining and well received presentation to the group, urging the students to work hard despite their personal challenges, identify their passions and acquire skills. Mrs. Ferguson is an associate science professor, mentor and administrator at the university’s Freeport campus.

Representatives of three of the community organizations that received donations from the GBAWC: Jinnel Sturridge, Rand Nature Center; Brigadier Eugenia Sumter, Salvation Army; David Otterbein, Grand Bahama Sailing Club.
