Thirteen
of Grand Bahama’s finest junior athletes travelled to St. Kitts &
Nevis to compete in The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Biennial Track
and Field Championships held on July 24th and 25th.
Proud of their accomplishments, three junior athletes visited Ginger
Moxey, Vice President of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA)
to share in the excitement of their wins.
“GBPA
is proud to support our junior athletes, as their sportsmanship and
medals prove that we are nurturing future Olympians, right here on Grand
Bahama Island,” stated Moxey while hugging each athlete as they
displayed their medals.
Junior
athletes, Juanne Lewis and Kadeisha Heild, competed in the Under 15
Girls 4X100 meter relay, winning Gold. They also secured Bronze in the
sprint medley. Junior sprinters, Destini Miller and Jasmine Sutherland,
claimed the bronze medal in the Under 13 Girls 4 X100 meter relay.
Junior track star, Valentina Bodie, and three other junior athletes from
Nassau, won the silver medal for The Bahamas in the 4X100 meter relay.
The recent CUT Championships hosted hundreds of athletes from eighteen
countries and have been pivotal for many of our nation’s greatest track
and field stars, like Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie.
The
(CUT) Biennial Track and Field Championships began in 1986, in
Barbados, and have since grown in importance and significance. Before
the team’s departure, Assistant Coach, Sandra Laing stated that she and
the athletes were very appreciative of contributions made by GBPA and
that the team would return to The Bahamas with medals, gold medals in
particular….and they did!
