GBPA recently hosted Basic Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED training for all of its employees, including executives. Freeport, Grand Bahama - Employees of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA), recently completed an eight month long training initiative, in Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED.  The training, which was made mandatory for all employees, was delivered by GBPA Health & Safety Manager, Mr. Jerome Knowles, who is certified by the American Red Cross.

Director of Security, Safety & Facilities for the GBPA Group, Linden Wilchcombe shared that, according to statistics, more than 150,000 deaths occur each year in situations where Basic First Aid could have made a difference.

“First Aid training is a valuable skill which can be easily acquired,” cited Wilchcombe. “GBPA provided the training, to ensure that every employee has the necessary skills and knowledge to assist in a life threatening situation, whether at home or on the job,” he continued.  “Clearly, we can see that based on statistics, it can make a tremendous difference should the need for it arise.”

As the training was mandatory for all employees of the Group, executives participated as well. President Ian Rolle described the sessions as both necessary and timely.

“As a service oriented company, our employees are constantly in contact with the general public, which includes our customers throughout the community, “stated Rolle.  “As such, the training is necessary and would be highly beneficial, should an emergency arise with a co-worker or maybe  involving a customer. As a result of this initiative, each employee now has the training and the wherewithal to confidently offer their assistance.” Rolle concluded.

Class facilitator Jerome Knowles expressed that while there was a lot of information to convey, he also wanted participants to enjoy the training.

“All aspects of safety within any organization is a serious matter, however, we tried to make the training experience a positive and enjoyable one for employees, “Knowles explained. He shared that although there were a few good laughs along the way, the training was very well received by employees, who all performed exceptionally well.

“Whether it’s the Security Team at Port Lucaya Marketplace, Administrators in the Executive Office, or the Facilities personnel in the workshops, basic first aid training is a necessary life tool and I am pleased that GBPA made it mandatory for all of its employees. You never know when you may need these skills.” Knowles concluded.

The sessions commenced in September last year, with classes occurring every two weeks. Participants were required to cover training in both theory and practical application segments and were awarded a certificate upon successful completion of the training.
