Freeport, Bahamas - Hurricane Matthew is now just a few hundred miles away from Grand Bahama. No-one can truly know the storm’s path or its impact, but we can brace for it as well as humanly possible. We at The Grand Bahama Port Authority and the island are better prepared than in earlier times, thanks to lessons learned from the hurricanes we have survived. Our emergency preparedness team are doing everything in their power to keep residents safe. Meetings have been held this past week to cover all checklists and emergency measures.

The potable water supply should not be interrupted during the storm as backup generators have been installed at the plants, to kick-in as and when power supply is impacted by the storm. The ground crews of Sanitation Services, our Building & Services Dept, and Lusco are on full alert.

There are contingency plans in place for flooding, but we urge you each to act responsibly for yourselves, your loved ones and your families and to heed all warnings, advice and evacuation notifications. GBPA are liaising closely with NEMA and the Grand Bahama Power Company for best co-ordination, reaction times and use of resources. All Command Centres have been activated. Again we stress the vital importance for you to heed all National Advisories issued by NEMA.

None of us can anticipate the danger of Hurricane Matthew, but it could be the most devastating storm in a decade. Thank you to all who are doing their part, no matter how big or small, to secure the safety of our city’s residents. The resilience of The Bahamas as a Nation and of Grand Bahama is well-known from Hurricanes Joaquin, Wilma, Jeanne, Frances and Floyd.

May God Bless you and keep you safe. Be patient and of good courage. Matthew too shall pass –
