Freeport, Grand Bahama - “The opportunity to build a mutually beneficial relationship between the city of Freeport and the city of Concord, North Carolina is a timely and welcomed one,” Derek Newbold stated during an early morning meeting with Concord Sister City officials.

Newbold, Business Development Manager for The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA), made a formal presentation on GBPA and the city of Freeport to Mr. John Dunlap, President and traveling members, Mrs. Rosemary Loftus (past President) and Mr. Jim Loftus, of Concord’s Sister Cities Association. The group arrived on Grand Bahama Monday past as part of a ‘Fact Finding’ visit, to secure a second Sister City relationship.

“Understanding the gamut of the Sister Cities programme, and the potential impact of exchange in the areas of tourism, education, business and medicine, we welcome Mr. Dunlap and Mrs. Loftus. We are confident that Grand Bahama will prove worthy of consideration as a second Sister City,” added Newbold.

Concord presently has a 20-year Sister City relationship with the city of Killarney in Ireland. Dunlap and his team advised that this relationship has realized great cultural benefits between Killarney and Concord, as well as created friendships which continue to this day.

Discussions involving opportunities for tourism programmes, as well as education and student exchange programmes for middle, high school and college students were highlighted. Further opportunities which would promote the advancement of medicine in both Freeport and the city of Concord were also areas of focus.

According to Newbold, talks regarding initiatives for business development opportunities between the two cities were shared; where Freeport and Concord officials would work together to grow each other’s business realms.

“The Sister Cities project is a promising one, and we look forward to where this initial meeting will take us,” Newbold concluded.

Sister Cities International was formed in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  President Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States, serves as Honorary Chairman.  Sister Cities International advances peace and prosperity through cultural, educational, humanitarian, and economic development exchanges.
