Freeport, Bahamas – As temperatures drop and the economy continues to struggle, the members of the Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock will work hard this coming Boxing Day to usher in a spirit of giving with their annual luncheon and breadbasket programme. In order to make this special event a success, Kiwanians request the assistance from individuals in the greater community to do their part and give what they can, extending an opportunity for everybody to partake in the spirit of generosity. The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) and Sawyer’s Fresh Market joined forces to aid in the club’s collections.

“Everyone is feeling the pressure of a difficult economic climate. The Grand Bahama Port Authority is committed to building healthy communities and recognizes the critical role food programmes play in meeting the needs of the communities’ most vulnerable residents, especially our elderly, “ expressed Mrs. Geneva Rutherford, GBPA Director of Community Relations. “GBPA is pleased to support the Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock’s annual breadbasket programme, whose work is more vital now than ever.”

Six month old grocery company, Sawyer’s Fresh Market was eager to partner with The Port for the Kiwanian initiated breadbasket cause. “We are pleased to partner with GBPA and support the Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock and their pioneering efforts to host a senior citizen luncheon and breadbasket programme,“ shared Philip Pinder, Vice President for Sawyer’s Fresh Market. “Supporting the communities in which we live and work is a core value of Sawyer’s Fresh Market.”

Kiwanian President Roscoe Saunders, thankful for the donation, spoke briefly about the club’s programme. “Every year Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock puts on an annual luncheon for some 200 senior citizens in our community. Through the breadbasket programme we are able to give seniors enough food to take home with them to last a month.” Saunders concluded that, “things are tough and we have seen a drastic increase in a number of people seeking help and this donation will help meet the growing need.”

Hunger is a growing threat among seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, the disabled, the homeless, the working poor and the newly unemployed families throughout the island and the nation. For 35 years the Kiwanis Club of Eight Mile Rock’s breadbasket programme has distributed goods to those who need it most. GBPA and Sawyer’s Fresh Market would like to encourage other corporate leaders to join them in keeping the breadbasket programme possible on Grand Bahama Island.
