The
World Health Organization’s (WHO) current cancer fact sheet, released
October 2011, lists cancer as a leading cause of death worldwide,
accounting for 7.6 million deaths in 2008.
Lung, stomach, liver, colon and breast cancer are the most prominent
cancer deaths each year. Many Grand Bahamians, have either an
unfortunate first-hand experience with, or knows someone who has been
touched by this disease. With this knowledge, it was without
hesitation, that The Grand Bahama Port Authority offered
monetary sponsorship support to the Marathon Bahamas organizers
of the Sunshine Insurance 2012: Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure
Weekend, scheduled for January 14th and 15th 2012 in Nassau, Bahamas.
“We
are committed to supporting the fundraising efforts to continue breast
cancer research,” expressed Vice President of The
Grand Bahama Port Authority Mrs. Ginger Moxey. “For all who battle
breast cancer, it is our intent to aid in building hope in the fight
against cancer. One day a cure will be found. Our contribution is about
belief.”
Accepting
the donation on behalf of the organization is cancer survivor and
Honourary Chairperson of the Susan G. Komen Bahamas
Race for the Cure, Mrs. Willie Moss, “We sincerely thank The Grand
Bahama Port Authority Limited and it’s Group of Companies for the
Support they have given to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The
statistics show that the rate of cancer in The Bahamas
is alarming,” shared Moss. “Through Susan G. Komen we’ve been able to
conduct quite a bit of research to see if we can find the cure for
cancer. If we can find the reason for it, we can find the cure for it
and that is what we are working towards. So thank
you Grand Bahama Port Authority in joining us in finding the cure.”
Marathon
Bahamas is a non-profit organization, formed in 2009 to organize and
execute the official marathon in The Bahamas and
related activities. Since its formation, the event has attracted
thousands of local and international runners, and is fast becoming one
of the popular marathons worldwide. In July 2010, Marathon Bahamas
forged a strategic partnership with Susan G. Komen race
for the Cure, the largest global grass-roots organization, dedicated
towards the eradication of breast cancer. This alliance changed Marathon
Bahamas from being a one day event to becoming the Sunshine Insurance
Race Weekend, inclusive of the Susan G. Komen
Bahamas Race for the Cure, The Marathon Expo and Marathon Bahamas.
Proceeds from the weekend will also benefit national organizations such
as The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, The Princess Margaret Hospital
Foundation, Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support
