Freeport, Grand Bahamas - A Sunland Baptist Academy graduate who is now excelling in the field of engineering will be headed to New Providence to take part in a camp geared towards sparking the interest of science in young Bahamians. Trenicka Rolle, co-founder and president of BETA, a consortium of Bahamian and Bahamian-American engineers and scientists.
According to Rolle, the organization seeks to utilize the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills of its members to help re-energize the Bahamas and provide opportunities for Bahamian youth who have signed up through www.betac242.com/apply
“It’s so important we invest in our Bahamian youth,” said Trenicka K. Rolle, co-founder and president of BETA. “With this camp we desire to ignite a passion for STEM within these students, while giving them the tools to improve performance in math and science and direction for careers in engineering. We are focused on bringing a STEM revolution to The Bahamas.”
Rolle, herself is a shining example of how Bahamians are making significant strides in the field abroad. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University and was granted scholarships by BORCO, Freeport Container Port and Grand Bahamas Port Authority to study Biomedical Engineering. She was then awarded the Bahamas National Academic Scholarship to study Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. Now, she’s joining other Bahamians such as Aisha Bowe, a rocket scientist who was the first Bahamian woman to work with NASA to lead the next generation of STEM through the five day summer camp that will introduce students in grades 7-9 or age 11 – 14, to multiple engineering disciplines through an in-depth streamed curriculum.
She’s appealing for Grand Bahama students to sign up as well, as she provisions are being made to secure travel and accommodation to provide them with this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Also joining them is host of BET’s Lift Every Voice and former Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs associate, Fonzworth Bentley of the Fonzworth Bentley Leadership Institute, which focuses on unleashing inner champions in its participants. Bahamian students are able to attend the camp, which can average about $500 per person, free of charge, thanks to generous donations by Rocket Fuel “Gives Back”.
