Bahama Island - The Salvation Army in Freeport has increased its readiness for
emergency disaster situations that may affect the island.
The Army, well known for its quick and
efficient response, has just added a complete mobile kitchen and serving unit
to its vehicle fleet. The unit, commonly called a DRU (Disaster Response Unit)
is a gift to Freeport by the Salvation Army’s Florida Headquarters. The Florida
Command was assisted in preparing this unit by the Headquarters in Atlanta, GA
“This vehicle will add immeasurably to the Army’s ability to assist people on
this island affected by any emergency disaster situation,” said Ben H. Bell, a
member of the Freeport Advisory Board who has seen the Salvation Army in action
in the United States as well as Grand Bahama Island.
“We see this unit as a tribute to long time
Salvation Army supporter Sir Jack Hayward, who was primarily responsible for
bringing the world-wide organization to Freeport 24 years ago,” Bell added. The
addition of the DRU is another step in the right direction.
The Salvation Army has been no stranger to providing short and long term
assistance to hurricane victims in Grand Bahama. Just four years ago when
back-to-back storms hit Grand Bahama, the Salvation Army staff and volunteers
stepped up and provided food, clothing and material assistance to thousands.
Those
efforts depleted the meager
resources of the Army and they have never fully recovered financially, yet they
keep providing service and ministry daily to scores, even hundreds of people
who come to them for food, clothing and spiritual counsel.
